Limerick racecourse opened in October 2001 to a record crowd of 18,000. It is the first built from scratch racecourse in Ireland for 50 years and has first rate modern facilities in the Hugh McMahon Stand.
It is the seventh different location for racing in Co. Limerick since the first recorded fixtures in 1790. It's predecessors were Bruff, Rathkeale, Newcastle, Lemonfield, Ballinacurra and Greenpark. The previous course at Greenpark closed in 1999 having held racing for 130 years. The present course is built on the site of a stud farm 250 acres of which is occupied by the racecourse.

Limerick racecourse has something for everyone, a race meeting to suit your style, pocket, taste in music, taste in beer, taste in jockeys. In fact racing in Limerick probably hosts the most
varied series of meetings of all the courses in the country. That's not just some promotional gimmick. It's true - lets demonstrate.
The following ecletic mix of themed racing is what (some of, not all) Limerick has to offer over the year. Chronologically, it goes a little something like this:
- Family Fun Day (March)
- National Student Day (April)
- Twilight Evenings & Concerts (June & July)
- Munster National and Ladies Days (October)
- Festive Fun (December)
A Great Day of Horse Racing, Food, Flutter, Craic and Live Entertainment. Limerick Racecourse's calendar highlights include St. Patrick's weekend, summer twilight racing festival and the Munster National In October. The Limerick Christmas Festival consists of 4 days of National Hunt racing and is a highlight of the social calendar in the city each year.
