Champion Trainer Willie Mullins has Four Runners for Goffs Thyestes in Gowran Tomorrow
Wednesday, 25 January 2012
The final declarations are in for the Goffs Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park on tomorrow, Thursday 26th January and, as expected, the feature race has attracted a deeply competitive full field of 18 runners.
Champion Trainer Willie Mullins will be represented by no less than four runners and while the lightly-weighted On His Own was a leading ante-post fancy for the race, the fact that Ruby Walsh rides Shakervilz for the Closutton maestro is sure to attract plenty of interest.
The substantial prize for the race looks to have strong prospects of heading to Wexford, with the Colm Murphy-trained Glam Gerry and the Paul Nolan-trained Adams Island both holding prominent positions in the betting market. The unexposed and fast-improving novice Glam Gerry is expected to play a prominent role in proceedings, while the booking of Barry Geraghty will do no harm to the prospects of Adams Island.
Local hopes will be represented by Bob Lingo from the Goresbridge base of Tom Mullins and Paddy Pub from the Windgap-based trainer Kieran Purcell, both of whom hold sporting chances.
Just as exciting as the main event will be the Grade 2 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle (1:35pm), as it will see a titanic clash between the Grade 1 winners Voler La Vedette and Zaidpour.
The Colm Murphy-trained Voler La Vedette has always been a high-class mare, but she has improved again this season and gained a well-deserved first Grade 1 win in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse last month.
Zaidpour was considered one of Ireland’s leading novice hurdle prospects last season after winning the Grade 1 Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse, but he never quite recaptured that form thereafter. However, Willie Mullins has changed up his training routine since then and he has won his two starts this season in very impressive style.
Voler La Vedette is likely to be the favourite under Andrew Lynch, but the Ruby Walsh-ridden Zaidpour represents a very stern test for her and it promises to be an exciting contest.
The ground is currently soft on both tracks and the forecast for tomorrow is primarily dry.
