Leopardstown Racecourse The New Venue For Flagship GOAL Mile

Tuesday, 6 December 2011

Leopardstown Racecourse and GOAL today announced Leopardstown as the location for this year’s flagship GOAL Mile on Christmas morning.

Launched on Monday by former Irish athletics great and GOAL Patron, Eamonn Coghlan, Leopardstown will replace Belfield as the venue for GOAL’s largest annual Mile.

“We are extremely happy that Leopardstown has generously agreed to host the event,” said GOAL’s Lisa O’Shea, “particularly as it will be the day before their annual four-day Christmas Festival.

“The venue is a perfect fit; Leopardstown is famous across the world for being host to many great events over the years.  It is a very convenient location and there is plenty of parking. We really hope that all the people who normally run the Mile at Belfield, and anyone else in the area, will come down and join us on Christmas morning.

We would also like to thank UCD for allowing us to stage the event at Belfield for the last 28 years and helping us to raise hundreds of thousands for the poorest of the poor in the process.”

Jane Davis of Leopardstown said: “We are delighted to stand in and provide our venue for the flagship GOAL mile on Christmas Day. We have a long and proud history of hosting athletic endeavours at Leopardstown. Our events are usually of an equine nature however, we were proud host of the World Cross Country Championships in 2002 and we are greatly looking forward to welcoming all the GOAL Mile athletes to our venue on Christmas morning. It will provide a great warm up for our 4 day Christmas Racing Festival which commences on St Stephen’s Day”.

The Leopardstown GOAL Mile will take place from 10am to 12noon on Christmas Day. GOAL Miles will also be staged at more than 100 venues nationwide over the Christmas and New Year period. For more details, visit www.goal.ie.
