23-year-old Shane Gorey grew up in Kilkenny and always rode in pony club and participated in show jumping around Ireland. He became interested in the racing industry at an early age and after completing his Leaving Cert at the age of 16, he joined RACE in Co. Kildare. Finishing the course at RACE in one year, Shane then started as an apprentice in the stable of Dermot Weld, qualified vet and top-class trainer based at Roswell House on the Curragh. Shane now lives in Kildare and has been primarily based at the Roswell House stables for the past seven years.

In August of 2002, Shane rode his first winner, Feelin’ Looser, for Richard Donohoe at Cork Racecourse and has since ridden 62 winners in Ireland.

While Shane spends the majority of the year in Ireland, he has also done several stints abroad. Between 2002 and 2006 he spent some time riding work for trainer David Carroll in the United States and after being awarded winner of the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Series in 2006, Shane travelled to Dubai for the first time to spend the winter riding for trainer Erwan Charpy; he has gone back every winter since.

Notable wins of Shane’s career include the 2006 ladbrokes.ie Irish Lincolnshire at the Curragh aboard Bawaader and the 2008 Hacketts Bookmakers Irish Cesarewitch on Suailce, both wins were ridden for Dermot Weld. Amongst Shane’s favourite mounts is a horse named Mutakarrim (GB), whom he has partnered up with to win two times, also for the Master of Roswell House. Shane has had two winners so far this year and looks to have a promising season ahead.
