Punchestown Racecourse is the home of Irish National Hunt Racing in Ireland and hosts a total of 18 race meetings throughout the year. The highlight of this racing calendar is the five-day Irish National Hunt Festival which takes place in April but occassionally may fall in May depending on when Easter falls. The Punchestown Festival hosts some of the best jump racing of the year, with 11 Grade 1 races taking place over the five days. This is the National Hunt Season Finale where many of the principal players from the festivals at Cheltenham, Fairyhouse and Aintree have another opportunity to cross swords. It is without question the highest quality of all the Irish National Hunt racing festivals in terms of the depth and quality of the action on show and it is the quality of the racing that invariably draws massive crowds to the Co. Kildare track.
There are Grade 1 races across all the major divisions of National Hunt racing, with notable highlights being the Boylesports.com Champion Chase on the opening day, the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup on the second day, the World Series Hurdle on the third day and the Rabobank Champion Hurdle on the fourth day. At the conclusion of the festival, the seasons leading performers are honoured and bestowed with the Champion titles. As well as there being top-class action all the way through the festival, the fun and entertainment continues well into the night with Naas and Kildare being hives of activity during the course of the festivities.
