The earliest record of racing in the area is in the 1870s but these races had ceased by 1902.  

Sinntara, owned by His Highness The Aga Khan, and the dam of the 2000 Irish Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sinndar, won a maiden race at Wexford in July 1992.

Wexford Revealed

Wexford Racecourse, and the county in general, is a very friendly, welcoming place (they’re used to being invaded by outsiders such as Vikings and Normans so they know how to deal with strangers). Furthermore its located in one of the most pleasant parts of the country, the sunny south-east. It’s true!

Wexford’s average sunshine quota is 4.48 hours per day against the national average of 3.75 hours so it’s much more likely to be sunny for your visit, whatever time of year that is. Even the name of its location, Bettyville, has a titillating appeal that reflects the feeling of bonhomie prevalent at the course.

It’s a fun course. The racing invariably features large fields of competitive flat and jump racing with the top jockeys from both codes in action. There is also an excellent view of the track from the stands. You will find that there is always a warm, lively atmosphere in Wexford and afterwards in the local hostelries. 

Course Characteristics

It is a gently undulating right-handed course of one mile and four furlongs which features flat and National Hunt racing. 

How To Get There

By Road:
The racecourse is 48km East of Waterford City and 24km North West of Rosslare Ferry Port.

By Rail:
The nearest railway station is in Wexford town, from where there is a taxi service to the racecourse. Regular rail service from Dublin is available

By Air:
The closest airport is Waterford (57km west). Regular service from Luton to Waterford Airport . Helicopter landing can be pre-arranged at the racecourse.

Refreshment Facilities

The main stand houses two bars upstairs, the Bettyville and Carriglawn bars. Also on the grounds is the Long Bar and a cafeteria serving tea, coffee and hot snacks plus the Ivy Roon Bar incorporating a spacious carvery restaurant. 

Corporate Facilities

The Carriglawn Room in the upper stand has a self containted bar which is available for corporate entertainment and buffets and can cater for up to 100 people. 

Wheelchair Facilities

There is a dedicated wheelchair viewing stand and there are wheelchair friendly toilets under the Middle Stand in the Ivy Room.

Après Racing

There is much to see and do in the environs of Wexford. There are three local 18 hole gold courses: Wexford, St Helens and Rosslare, the latter also features a 12-hole play anytime course. There is much archaeological interest in Wexford town and the local area plus a Heritage Centre in Ferrycarraig. Of more recent historical interest are the John F Kennedy Arboretum and the Dunbrody Famine Ship, both in New Ross. Also extensive fishing in local rivers Slaney and Barrow in addition to sea fishing.
