• All You Need to Know

    To register as an owner with Horse Racing Ireland, the correct paperwork must be completed and submitted to Horse Racing Ireland in advance of an entry being made. While it only takes two working days for an account to be opened (assuming all the paperwork and funds are in order), Horse Racing Ireland advises owners to submit all the paperwork well in advance to ensure no delays in the registration occurs.

    The following are options for an owner to consider and details of paperwork required:

  • Ownership Formats

  • A horse owned under this format will run in the individual’s colours and name. Each sole owner must have their own individual set of racing colours registered. A Horse Racing Ireland Owner account will be opened in the registered owner’s name.

    This account will act as a holding account with all debits (cost of entry) and credits (prize-money) lodged into this account. The owner can withdraw from this account at any stage but the account must be kept in credit.

    Racing clubs, like syndicates, are an ideal introduction to racehorse ownership. A club significantly reduces the cost of racehorse ownership due to the large number of people involved in each horse.

    A club can be set up amongst friends, family or even a group of strangers with a shared interest in racehorse ownership.

    Alternatively, members can join an already established club for a set fee on a monthly or annual basis.

    A Club is set up with this standard structure:

    There is no limit to the number of members but a minimum of two and maximum of four trustees must be registered as owners with HRI to carry out the administration responsibilities of the Club.

    A Horse Racing Ireland account will be opened in the name of the racing club.

    The Club name will appear as the owner on the racecard. This name will be no longer than 40 characters including spaces and the word “Club”.

    Leasing is a brilliant way to get involved in ownership without the initial cost of purchasing. Again, trainers and bloodstock agents will assist you in finding a horse to lease.  Horse Racing Ireland strongly recommends that a lease agreement is drawn up and suggest the following points are discussed at that point –

    • Duration of lease;
    • Option to extend;
    • Option to purchase;
    • Distribution of prizemoney;
    • State lessor and lessee;
    • Case of injury;
    • Veterinary fees;
    • How is the lease terminated, who can terminate, notice of termination?
    • Lease fee;
    • Method of payment, i.e. In advance or arrears, monthly or annually.

    Once all parties know exactly where they stand, leasing can be hugely beneficial for all involved.
