The new track at Limerick opened in October 2001 and since then has witnessed large crowds walk through the turnstiles to experience a brilliant day of competitive horse racing. Limerick racecourse is a galloping, right-handed oval track with a circuit of over a mile and three furlongs. It is located six miles south of Limerick city with its modern facility  clearly visible from the N20 motorway. 

Home to horse racing in Limerick this course hosts 18 fixtures all year round through weekends, weekdays and bank holidays. The track is best known for its summer evening meetings which feature live music after racing and the annual four-day Christmas festival which runs from St.Stephen's Day featuring the Greenmount Park Chase Grade 1 with countless Grade 2 races across the rest of the festival. 

The two -day meeting at the end of October, the Munster National Weekend is a favourable fixture at the track. The feature race of the weekend is the JT McNamara Ladbrokes Munster National Handicap Steeplechase Grade A which entices many racegoers to the course. On the Flat, the Listed Martin Molony Stakes in June is the most valuable race.

Day 1 of the ‘King John’s Castle Festival’ kicks off in fine style with 7 top class national hunt races on the card. The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Cailin Alainn Mares Hurdle of €27,500 and the Rathsallagh Country House Novice Hurdle of €25,000 are set to attract strong entries.

Day 2 offers another thrilling 7 national hunt races on the card including the STL Handicap Chase worth €45,000. The feature of the day is the €100,000 Grade 3 JT McNamara Ladbrokes Munster National Handicap Steeplechase, the pinnacle race of the festival.
