From Moynalty, County Meath, Declan is a son Des McDonogh who trained the brilliant hurdler Monksfield to win consecutive Champion Hurdles at Cheltenham in 1978 and 1979. Associated with Kevin Prendergast from quite an early stage of his career, he rode his first Group 1 winner on Rebelline in the Tattersalls Gold Cup in 2002. He was also crowned Champion Jockey in 2006.
Declan has enjoyed considerable success over a long career and can also count the likes of Miss Beatrix in the Shelbourne Hotel Goffs Million, Termagant in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and La Collina in the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes among his most notable wins. His Prix de l'Abbaye success on Maarek at Longchamp in 2013 is among his own most memorable victories. Â
Declan rode his 1,000th career winner on the Dermot Weld-trained Broad Street at Navan on May 19, 2018.Â
