From Moone, County Kildare, Kate is the youngest daughter of leading dual-purpose trainer Jessica Harrington. She rode a winner on her first ride when taking the charity race at the Punchestown Festival in 2007 on the then 13-year-old Moscow Flyer, the legendary 13-time Grade 1 winner who had been taken out of retirement to contest the race. It didn’t take long for Kate to get off the mark in a “real race”, with her riding Helvic Head, again trained by her mother, to success in a bumper at Ballinrobe on just her second ride in such contests three months later. In 2009, she partnered Imperial Cascade to win the very valuable Goffs Land Rover Bumper at the Punchestown Festival. While her success in that race remains her most valuable, it could be argued that her win on Modem in the Connacht Hotel Amateur Riders Handicap at the Galway Festival in 2015 is the biggest and most high-profile of her career.
