Paddy began his career riding on the pony circuit and attended RACE on the Curragh from where he was placed with Kevin Prendergast. Too heavy to be a flat jockey, Paddy switched his attentions to the jumping game and joined Dessie Hughes and became an amateur, riding his first winner for trainer Niall Moran at Down Royal in May 2008. 

Paddy turned conditional on St Stephens Day 2010 and made a great start to life in the paid ranks when winning on the Liz Doyle-trained The Hoodoo Remains at Tramore just six days later. Paddy teamed up with trainer Jessica Harrington a couple of years later and continues to be based with the Commonstown trainer. Paddy rode out his claim when successful on Neverushacon in the Party Time Ltd. Marquee Hire Chase at Limerick on Sunday, May 8, 2018.

Paddy rode his biggest winner in terms of prizemoney when partnering the Jessica Harrington-trained Whisperinthebreeze to win the Abbey International Leopardstown Handicap Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival in February, 2019. He is an older brother of fellow National Hunt jockey, Jack. 

His first Graded race success came at Navan on December 18, 2020 where he won the Grade 2 BetVictor Novice Hurdle on the Jessica Harrington-trained Ashdale Bob.
