From Sligo, Derek Fox began his career locally riding primarily for Mark McNiff and Noel Kelly. Derek started out as an amateur rider and partnered his first winner on the Kelly-trained Mighty Whitey in a bumper at Sligo on May 19th, 2010. He turned professional the following April and rode his first winner in the paid ranks when the McNiff-trained Sean Airgead won at Sligo on August 4th, 2011. He gained a notable success on Charlie's Vic, trained by Noel Kelly, in the Grade 3 Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Chase at Limerick on St Patrick's Day in 2013. Fox subsequently made the move to Scotland and joined forces with trainer Lucinda Russell, riding his first winner for her yard on The Friary at Hexham on November 8, 2013. He was appointed Russell's stable jockey in April, 2016. Derek Fox landed the biggest prize of them all when winning the 2017 Randox Health Grand National at Aintree on the Russell-trained One For Arthur.Â
