From Kilcullen, County Kildare, Charlie is a son of former top National Hunt rider and trainer Conor O'Dwyer. He was 16 years of age when riding his first winner on Roses Queen, trained by his father, in the second division of the La Bucca Restaurants Handicap at Fairyhouse on June 14, 2019. 

As a child, Charlie hunted with the Kildare Hunt Club and the Killinick Harriers and was also involved in showjumping. He was a student in Newbridge College when he rode his first winner. 

Charlie rode his first winner over hurdles on Uncle Gerhard, also trained by his father, on Goffs Thyestes Day at Gowran Park in January, 2022.
