Tom Gibney first came to public attention as an amateur jockey. The highlight of his career in the saddle was perhaps his win on the Noel Meade-trained Saving Bond in the GPT Handicap at the Galway Festival, one of the most treasured prizes that can be won by an amateur rider in Ireland. Just under three years after that, Gibney almost claimed another much sought after amateur prize, finishing second in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup at the Cheltenham Festival on the Gary Brown-trained Marching Marquis. Having ended his riding career in 2005, Gibney went about taking out a license to train and having set up base in Kells, he set out on his new career path with the success of Lion Na Bearnai, ridden by Andrew Thornton, in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse in 2012 an undoubted highlight.
