He began training in 1986 and enjoyed considerable success with Corwyn Bay giving him a big early victory in the Cartier Million at the Phoenix Park two years later. He landed the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket with Las Meninas in 1994. In 1998, he won the Irish 1,000 Guineas with Tarascon. The same filly had won the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes the previous year. Stack also enjoyed further high-profile wins with the likes of Lolly For Dolly, Alexander Tango and Myboycharlie. Pat Eddery rode Stack's first winner as a trainer, Northern Express, at the Phoenix Park in August, 1986. Tommy Stack enjoyed a notable National Hunt success with Kingsmill in the Irish Champion Hurdle in 1989.
On Sunday, October 25th 2016, it was announced that Tommy Stack would be retiring from the training ranks that his son and long-time assistant Fozzy (James) would be take over the licence at Thomastown Castle in Golden, County Tipperary. Stack sent three horses to Dundalk on December 23rd, 2016 and was rewarded with two winners as A Shin Impala won the Crowne Plaza Race & Stay Rated Race and Thunder Speed landed the second division of the Elusive Pimpernel Maiden. Both were ridden by his long-time ally Wayne Lordan. Tommy Stack's final runner was Duke Of Waspington who finished down the field in a bumper at Leopardstown on January 8th, 2017. Fozzy had his first winner on the opening day of the 2017 Flat season when Gino Severini and Chris Hayes landed the Palmerstown House Madrid Handicap. It was his first runner with a licence.Â
