From Kilmaley, County Clare, but based in Kilmihil, County Limerick, Richard enjoyed his first winner with just his fourth runner when Alans Pride, ridden by Billy Lee, won the Shabra Charity Foundation Handicap at Dundalk on January 27th, 2017. And just seven days later, the five-year-old Patrick gave O'Brien his second success when taking the Download The At The Races App Handicap under Evan Daly at the same venue. Richard's involvement with horses began as a teenager riding out for Joe Crowley in Piltown and he also rode out for Aidan O'Brien who had just begun training in Ballydoyle at the time. He got his amateur riders' licence at 17 and rode a single point-to-point winner on Festive Project at The Pigeons in 1999. Richard took out his training licence in December, 2016.
