Alpha Centauri
Owned by the Niarchos Family and trained by Jessica Harrington, Alpha Centauri was the outstanding three-year-old in the summer of 2018, winning an Irish Classic in May and three Group 1 races in Britain and France subsequently.
Alpha Centauri was retired in September 2018 after she chipped a joint in her fetlock when taking second place in the Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown.
Her winning roll had begun at the Curragh in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas and that was followed in June by success in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. She won the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket in July and then beat the boys in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August. Colm O'Donoghue was in the saddle on each occasion.
As her retirement was announced, Alpha Centauri's trainer Jessica Harrington said: "I've had an amazing summer with her. she gave me my first classic winner, my first Royal Ascot winner, my first French winner - she's done an awful lot of firsts for me. I can't thank the Niarchos family enough."
