From Conna, County Cork, Johnny Barry was well established as a point-to-point rider by the time he rode his first winner on the racecourse, Grace N' Favour, at Sligo in May, 2010. He had ridden his first winner 'between the flags' on Michael Hourigan's Some Craic at Dromahane in November, 2007. 

A leading point-to-point rider, Barry has ridden several high-class horses on the circuit before they were to become household names on the racecourse of Britain and Ireland. These include Angel’s Breath, Commander Of Fleet, Minella Indo, Minella Melody, and Notebook.
