From Fethard, County Tipperary, Ben Coen is a nephew of and is apprenticed to trainer Andy Slattery. He rode 40 winners on the pony racing circuit and rode his first winner on the racecourse when landing the Ash Brothers Building Contractors Handicap (Division 2) on Timia for trainer Keith Clarke at Dundalk on November 17, 2017. 

Ben proved to be one of the finds of the season the following year and rode by far his biggest early winner when taking the Irish Stallion Farms EBF "Northfields" Handicap on the Peter Fahey-trained Hamley on the second day of the Longines Irish Champions Weekend at the Curragh in September, 2018.

He rode his first Group race winner when partnering the Johnny Murtagh-trained Know It All to win the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud Fillies Stakes at Leopardstown in July. 2020.
